信源汇聚单元一般都是三层交换机或者三层以上的交换机。核心层是全光网络的主干部分，保障整个网络性能，是AOC全光网的管理设备，核心层交换机的主要目的在于通过高速转发通信，提供快速、可靠的骨干传输结构，因此核心层交换机应该具有如下特性：可靠性、高效性、冗余性、容错性、可管理性、适应性、低延时性等。
